The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out?or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.?
He walked with no pull on the leash to the catch pen. The runner easily clasped the collar around his neck. He entered the play yard timidly with a tucked tail and a low body. He was approached by a female lab. He tolerated her sniffing him but created space away from her. A male pit bull approached him quickly. He gave him teeth and backed away. The handler called to him. He slowly approached him for affection. The female lab came up to him and lingered in his face. He snapped at her and ran away. He was taken into the catch pen for a handling assessment. He currently is kenneled with another dog, but they did come from the same household. Due to his defensiveness in the yard, he will be designated as no dogs recommended. BEHAVIORALLY OK FOR PUBLIC ADOPTION, ADULTS (REC), NO DOGS (REC), LOW ENERGY
Handling:
He was taken into the catch pen after play group. He was given a few moments to acclimate to his surroundings. The handler called to him and he approached slowly with concerned eyes. The handler spent a few minutes building trust with him. He allowed the handler to check his ears and teeth with no reaction. He allowed the handler to touch his tail with no reaction. When the handler picked up his front paw, he pushed it down. When the handler picked up his back paw, he pulled it up and away. He was returned to his kennel without issue.
