?The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change
based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.?
Stark was barking defensively at the back of the kennel with a tense body, dilated pupils, hackles up, and a low tail. He
approached the front of the kennel with coaxing. He was wary of the leash, but the runner was able to gently toss the leash
over his head. He pulled strongly on leash while bypassing the other kennels with an anxious demeanor, and was difficult to
collar. He was sensitive to touch, and snapped at the runner several times before the collar was safely fastened. In the catch
pen, his body was neutral, his eyes were neutral, and his tail was neutral. He entered the yard, and briefly greeted the other
dogs with a neutral demeanor. He roamed the yard, keeping to himself as much as possible. He was wary of the handler, and
moved away with concerned eyes anytime the handler approached him. Stark is tolerant of the other dogs, has a medium
energy level, and does not have a playstyle at this time.

Stark was already in the yard when the handler decided to begin the handling assessment. He was moved to the side yard,
and given a few moments to decompress before the handler entered the yard. He was extremely avoidant of the handler, and
tried to run away while looking for an exit. His body was tense, his eyes were wide and concerned, and he panted heavily.
He stared at the handler with hard eyes anytime the handler tried to pet him. The handler used the Assess-A-Hand, but Stark
would not allow the handler to touch him. He continued to avoid the handler while pawing at the gate in an attempt to
escape. The handler was able to pet his rear end when he wasn?t paying attention, but he ran away as soon as he realized the
handler was petting him. Stark was extremely uncomfortable with being handled, so the assessment was ended, and stark was
returned to his kennel with no issues.
