Description
The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out?or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.
He growled with hackles raised and wide eyes as he greeted several dogs through the play yard fence. The runner was not comfortable placing the collar around his neck and asked the handler to assist. Walker would flinch and mouth the handler?s hand whenever his hands were near his head and neck. After several minutes of trust building and touching his head to desensitize him, Walker tolerated the collar being clasped around his neck. The handler walked him into the yard on a long loose leash. He briefly explored the yard, ignoring the other dogs. He was approached by a young, male pit bull. Walked froze with wide eyes and neck pressed the pit bull. Without provocation, Walker growled and then lunged at the pit bull?s neck trying to bite. The handler pulled him away before contact could be made. Walker then approached a calm female shepherd. Walker had hackles raised with wide eyes as he neck pressed her. He started growling while pressing her down and lunged at her neck. The handler was able to pull him off quickly before making contact. He was removed from the yard at this time. Due to his discomfort being handled and his offensive behavior towards other dogs, he is designated as BEHAVIORALLY OK FOR PUBLIC ADOPTION, ADULTS (REQ), NO DOGS (REQ), MEDIUM ENERGY
