\"The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behaviormay change based on swroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.\"
She was easily collared by the runner in the catch pen. Shew entered the play yard with soft body language. She was approached by two dogs at the same time and exchanged soft greetings with them both. After the dogs broke away, she beganto roam the yard and explore. She was tolerant of dogs trailing her to sniff her. She continued to roam the yard and exchange soft greetings with the other dogs. She remained social for the rest of her time in the yard. There were dogs playing during her time in the yard, but she did not engage in or entice any play. She would approach the handlers occasionally and allow them to pet her. Cali is social with the other dogs, but she displayed no play style at this time. See resource guarding assessment for rescue only stipulation.

Due to claims from the previous home of her resource guarding food and toys, a resource guarding assessment was conducted. She was on leash and the leash was secured to the play yard fence as precaution. The handler placed a bowl of wet food mixed with kibble in front of her. She began to eat it, and the handler waited a few seconds for her to start enjoying the food. At this point, the handler used an assess-a-hand to conduct the resource guarding assessment. As the assess-a-hand got within a couple of feet of the bowl, she stopped eating and stared at the hand. The handler stopped and she continued eating. When the handler put the assess-a-hand closer and touched the bowl, she gave a lip curl. The handler was able to pet her head with the assess-a-hand while she was eating, but she was tense and gave side eye. When the handler attempted to move the bowl with the assess-a-hand, she lunged and bit the hand. The assessment was ended at this point, and she was allowed to finish eating. After a while she stopped eating and walked a couple steps away from the food. She was not looking at the food and was looking out through the fence. The handler attempted to remove the bowl with the assess-a-hand. When she saw the hand move the bowl she lunged and bit it. As the handler was moving the bowl away, using the assess-a-hand, she continued biting the hand multiple times. After the food was removed, she was retured to her kennel without issue. Due to displaying resource guarding during the assessment and a history of resource guarding in the previous home, she will be designated as rescue only. She will also require a known history of aggression disclosure fom.
