A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.? Charlie was at the front of the kennel with a neutral body, neutral gaze, closed mouth, and a low tail with a soft wag. He was easy to leash, but required coaxing and gentle pressure on the leash to exit the kennel. He trailed behind the runner with a slightly tense body while bypassing the other kennels, and was easy to collar. In the catch pen, his body was neutral, his eyes were neutral, and his tail was neutral. He entered the yard, and exchanged appropriate greetings with the other dogs. He engaged in gentle play, and was very tolerant of being mounted. He was sensitive to corrections, even when they were not directed at him. He quickly moved away with a lowered head and tail when the other dogs were corrected, but would return to the handler when coaxed. He solicited petting with a calm demeanor, and continued to engage in play with the other dogs. Charlie is tolerant of the other dogs, has a low energy level, and prefers a gentle-dainty playstyle.
