A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and ife experences. He required a very go-slow approach when being collared by the runner in the catch pen. He would flinch and would whip his head around with an open mouth. He entered the play yard with soft body language. He was approached by a male Pitbull. He tolerated him sniffing him, but he did not retum the greeting. He was then approached by a female shepherd and displayed the same behavior. He began to roam the yard and explore. He was tolerant of dogs trailing him to sniff him. After some time, he began to relax more and approach the other dogs, exchanging soft greetings with them. He remained social with the other dogs for the rest of his time in the yard, but he was more comfortable around the calmer dogs. There were dogs playing during his time in the yard, but he did not engage in or entice any play. After some time and a very go-slow approach, he began to approach one of the handlers and allow them to pet him. Duke is social with the other dogs, but he displayed no play style at this time and would ikely do best with a calmer dog. See handling assessment for rescue only stipulation. The handler knelt and called to him. He approached the handler with soft body language. He allowed the handler to pet his head, chest and down his back. If the handler would touch near his mouth or paws, he would whip his head with an open mouth. If he was touched without expecting it, he flinches, startles very easily and whips his head with an open mouth. He requires a very go-slow approach and trust building to even get close to him at first. He also needs socialization to being on a leash. Due to his fearful nature, handling sensitivity, and lack of socialization, he will be designated as rescue only at this time.
