?The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out?or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may
change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.?
Leo greeted the runner nicely with a relaxed demeanor sniffing/licking the runner?s hand. Leo was easy to leash/remove
from the kennel and was taken to the catch pen. Leo was collared/leashed/muzzled easily and without incident. Leo greeted
the dogs at the barrier with a relaxed demeanor and was allowed into the play yard. Leo displayed a relaxed body, open
mouth pant, natural ear set, relaxed tail wag, and soft eyes. A few dogs briefly passed by Leo but did not stop to greet him.
Leo moved on and began to explore the play yard. One of the dogs approached to greet Leo and he suddenly lunged forward
attempting to start a scuffle. The handler was able to grab Leo?s leash preventing him from reaching the dog (Leo had a very
strong pull) and was difficult to steer. The play yard was adjusted to have female dogs only (Leo has a reported history of
being selective of male dogs). Some of the dogs approached Leo and sniffed him briefly before he again suddenly lunged at
the dog. The handlers quickly intervened and were able to separate Leo and shifted him to the alone time yard. In both
incidents when the handler grabbed the leash Leo had a very strong pull towards the dogs. Leo displayed a relaxed demeanor
and when the handler entered the yard with him, he sought engagement. The muzzle was removed and he continued to
display a relaxed demeanor and continued to solicit petting. Leo was allowed further alone time before being returned to his
kennel. See additional assessment for placement recommendations.

Leo was in the play yard prior to the assessment and was given time to decompress. Leo displayed a relaxed body, loose tail
wag, open mouth pant, natural ear set, and soft eyes. Leo approached the handler seeking engagement and leaned into the
handler?s touch. The handler was able to examine Leo?s ears, mouth, abdomen, back, lower extremities, and tail without
incident. Leo was returned to his kennel with without incident. Leo is recommended to be made available to rescue only high
