A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out?or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.? On approach, I knelt down at her kennel and she began to low growl-would not retreat or hand target but just stood there growling. I closed her inside and she backed away. Able to leash without incident. She managed to hop over the threshold on her own. Light pull to the yard. I kept her on leash and allowed her to explore. She did not seek engagement. At one point I sat on the bench and she was looking out, I started to pet/scratch her back and she was low growling. I stopped and walked her to the other yard (grabbed the Assess A hand and ID band first). I dropped the leash and she explored, she would come over when called but did not seek additional engagement (would turn and start walking away). Did not show interest in toys. I brought her to the catch pen and conducted the assessment with the Assess A Hand (I went slow)-she tolerated everything but was tense. At that point I did place the ID band on her but she slowly turned to look at me (hard stare) and lunged up towards me (once). At that point I clipped a double leash on her and returned to kennel.
