A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.? Ross was at the front of the kennel with a neutral body, soft eyes, and a low tail. He was wary of the leash, and retreated to the back of the kennel. He dodged the leash several times, so the handler stepped into the kennel and gently tossed the leash over his head. He walked nicely on leash while bypassing the other kennels, and was easy to collar. In the catch pen, his body was tense, his tail was tucked, he bared his teeth, and he snapped at the other dogs through the fence. He was easy to steer. He entered the yard with a tense body, closed mouth, concerned eyes, and a tucked tail. He eventually greeted the other dogs with a timid demeanor. He began to play with the other dogs while maintaining a soft demeanor. He was a bit wary of the handlers, but eventually approached the handler to solicit petting. Ross is tolerant of the other dogs, has a medium energy level, and prefers a gentle-dainty playstyle. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.? Ross was already in the yard when the handler decided to begin the handling assessments. He was moved to the side yard, and given a few moments to decompress before the handler entered the yard. He approached the handler with a timid demeanor. He stood next to the handler with a neutral body, soft eyes, and a neutral tail. He allowed the handler to pet his head, neck, back, sides, and abdomen with no issues. The handler was able to check his ears and teeth, and touch his tail and back legs. When the handler touched his front paws, his body tensed slight and he side-eyed the handler. Once the assessment was over, he allowed the handler to continue petting him.
