"The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from howthey behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behaviormay change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences."
He required an extremely go-slow approach when being collared by the runner. He was extremely wary and was constantly watching the handler's hands and licking his lips. Eventually the handler was able to collar him, while he was distracted looking through the play yard fence. He entered the play yard with soft body language. He was approached by a male Doberman mix to greet him. He immediately gave a show of teeth and then a hard air snap. The waming was respected and the Doberman walked away. He was then approached by a female Pitbull to greet him and displayed the same behavior. He began to roam they yard to explore and kept to himself. He remained defensive with all dogs that approached him, giving show of teeth and hard air snaps. At times he would give show of teeth to dogs, when they were over 8 feet away from him.
He maintained this defensive behavior for the rest of his time in the yard. He was wary of the handlers in the yard and constantly kept his distance from them. He appears under socialized with dogs and people. Due to his defensive behavior toward the other dogs, he would likely do best as the only dog in the home. See handling assessment for rescue only stipulation.

He was taken to the catch pen for the handling assessment after play group. The handler knelt and verbally coaxed him. He would approach closer and had a low tail wag, but he would not allow the handler to touch him. He was very wary of touch and would flinch and create space. The handler sat with him for a while and attempted to build trust with him. The handler attempted to pet near his neck and remove the collar. He gave a waming bite toward the handler's hand. He did not make contact andit was a waming. The handing assessment was ended at this point and he was retumed to his kennel. Due to his lack of socialization, handling sensitivity and training required, he will need to go to a rescue.
