A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.? Nala was at the back of the kennel with a tense body. She barked anxiously, and would not approach the front of the kennel. The runner stepped away from the kennel, and Nala moved to the inside of the kennel. The runner closed the divider door, and Nala began to bark defensively. She dodged the leash several times before the runner was able to leash her. She exited the kennel on her own, but was wary of the environment. She walked nicely by the runner?s side, and was easy to collar. In the catch pen, her body was slightly tense, her eyes were concerned, and her tail was low. She entered the yard, and was immediately overwhelmed when the other dogs approached to greet her. She panicked, but settled when the handler moved the other dogs away. She slowly began to engage in play with the other dogs. She was easily overwhelmed, but continued to engage in play. Nala is tolerant of the other dogs, has a medium energy level, and prefers a gentle-dainty playstyle.
