The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out?or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may
change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.
Chato A5461187 (Intact) was mid-kennel with a tense posture, barking defensively upon the runner?s arrival. He settled with
a verbal correction, allowing himself to be retrieved with ease. Chato proceeded to lead the way to the catch pen, bypassing
his neighboring kennels. Once inside the catch pen, he stood calmly during collar and leash placement. Chato was allowed
into the yard where he exchanged greetings with the dogs, exhibiting a slightly tense posture. He showed tolerance when one
of the dogs mounted him, appearing uncomfortable without escalating. The other dog was redirected and Chato moved on to
explore the environment. His body language intensified when he crossed paths with one of the male dogs, becoming
confrontational with a high, stiff tail. The handlers were able to easily steer them away from each other. Chato continued
roaming the yard, showing no interest in engaging in play with the other dogs or interacting with the handlers. However, he
became triggered by the previous male dog, unexpectedly lunging offensively as the other dog wandered into his proximity,
causing a small scuffle. The handlers used a pet corrector tool causing them to pause right away. The session concluded as
Chato was unable to coexist peacefully in the yard, and he was separated to an empty yard to begin his handling assessment.
Based on his interactions in the yard, Chato could benefit from a home without other dogs.

Chato A5461187 (Intact) was allowed to decompress prior to the assessment. Firm leash control was required to keep him
still as he repeatedly pulled away. Once settled, he stood still with a nervous demeanor, yawning, and muscle twitching but
tolerant as the handler began to lightly palpate his ears, mouth, abdomen, tail, and legs. Chato displayed a tense body
posture, with wide, concerned eyes, a closed mouth with occasional lip licking, ears slightly back, and a tucked tail. Once the
session concluded, he was returned to his kennel without incident. Chato could benefit from an experienced owner who can
patiently work with confidence and handling skills. Slow introductions are highly recommended to allow him to warm up to
people.
