A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home.' Flora displayed a tense and reactive demeanor during handling and dog introductions. She required slow handling for safe removal from the kennel and showed barrier reactivity and animal aggression toward nearby dogs in the play yard, including lunging, barking, snapping, and biting at fencing. Flora was unable to co-exist with other dogs and required separation during the session. During her physical assessment, Flora tolerated handling but remained tense, wary, and disengaged. Flora is recommended for rescue-only placement with no other dogs due to observed barrier reactivity and animal aggression concerns. Medium energy level. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Flora was at the front of the kennel alert barking/growling/lip curling/tense demeanor as the runner greeted her. It took several firm verbal corrections for Flora to settle down. Using a slow approach, the handler was able to leash/remove Flora from the kennel. She was taken to the catch pen and was collared/leashed using a slow approach as she appeared tense/side eyed the runner. Flora greeted the dogs at the barrier with a neutral demeanor and was allowed into the play yard. Flora displayed a slightly tense body, closed mouth, natural ear set, low tail, and a neutral gaze. As the dogs approached Flora suddenly lunged at the approaching dogs taking big air snaps. The handler was able to grab the leash but Flora continued to lunge/bark/snap at any nearby dog. She was shifted to the alone time yard and displayed a neutral demeanor. But any time a dog was near the barrier or approached her Flora charged the barrier and bit/pulled the fencing where the dogs were. She required frequent steering as she continued to appear reactive at the barrier. Flora maintained a tense demeanor fort the remainder of the play session and was kept in the alone time yard. She was unable to co-exist in the main yard and appeared to be barrier reactive when any dog approached/was nearby. See additional assessment for placement recommendations. Flora displayed a slightly tense body, low tail, closed mouth, natural ear set, and a neutral gaze. The handler called her over, but she did not approach and gave them a stern gaze. The handler back tied her for safety and proceeded with the assessment hand for safety. The handler was able to examine Flora's ears, mouth, abdomen, back, lower extremities, and tail. Flora maintained a neutral demeanor throughout occasionally side eyeing the handler. Flora did not seek engagement post assessment and was returned to her kennel. Flora is recommended to be made available to rescue only (+KHOA barrier reactivity/animal aggression) medium energy level no other dogs required.
