About duke: Hi, my name is DUKE
(A1408216)
I am a 1 year old, neutered male. I weigh 60.70lbs. I have been here 6 days.
Duke is a bundle of joy wrapped in a vibrant, energetic spirit. This young boy is the perfect match for someone who believes that life is best spent on the move. Whether he's sprinting across a yard or showing off his smarts, Duke's happy-go-lucky nature is impossible to miss.
He is already well on his way to being a star pupil, having mastered both sit and lay down. While he can be a bit vocal or reactive when he's behind a barrier, he is incredibly easy to redirect; one squeak of a toy and he'll come running to sit politely for a treat. He is a total fetch enthusiast and lives for human affection, making him as much a cuddler as he is an athlete. Duke is looking for an active household that can provide the structure and physical outlets a young, spirited dog needs to thrive.
If you're ready for a life filled with play, treats, and plenty of love, Duke is waiting to meet you. Ask staff about a foster field trip to see how this clever boy shines outside of the shelter environment and help him through his decompression period in a home setting.
My Special Considerations
Poor Duke has had a rough past few months and he needs more help than the shelter can give him. He was first brought to the shelter by animal protection services when abandoned in February. He arrived with a female dog who appeared to be a littermate. He was adopted and returned after 3 months through no fault of his own. However, the adopter reported he barked at dogs. He was then adopted again and returned due to being barrier reactive and attempting to jump a fence to gain access to a small dog and on leash reactivity to people. He was the adopted and returned again due to dog-to-dog issues: he was not properly introduced to a new dog and instigated a fight with this dog but he did not cause injury.
He has come to shelter playgroup and has shown dog selective behaviors including being challenging to new dogs. He gets along well with some dogs, but not all. He has preferences about which dogs he's comfortable around and can sometimes struggle to be socially appropriate with certain others. With ongoing training, supervision, and proper introductions, his interactions with other dogs can continue to improve. We recommend slow, structured introductions to new dogs to ensure positive experiences.
His reactivity has been steadily increasing due to the inconsistency he has experienced in the past few months. He is barking, pulling and lunging towards other dogs at the shelter. This environment is overstimulating with the number of dogs he's being housed near his stress levels and reactivity have been increasing. He is friendly with people. He needs more guidance and training than the shelter can provide, therefore we are urgently seeking placement for him in a home that can give him time to decompress and training to improve his reactivity. Due to his complicated needs and the severity of these behaviors, this animal is transfer only, however, long term foster could be considered under the right circumstances.
This animal needs placement by 5/19 at 3 PM.
