A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Penny was barking defensively when the runner approached. She ran to the other side of the kennel, so the runner closed the divider and walked to the other side. Penny was at the back of the kennel with a tense body, hackles up, ears back, concerned eyes, and a tucked tail. The runner stepped into the kennel and gently tossed the leash over her head. She required coaxing to exit the kennel, pulled slightly on leash while bypassing the other kennels, and was easy to collar. In the catch pen, her body was neutral, her eyes were neutral, and her tail was neutral. She entered the yard, and timidly allowed the other dogs to greet her. She stayed near the handler for some time before she began to roam the yard. She kept to herself as much as possible, and maintained a quiet demeanor. Penny is tolerant of the other dogs, has a low energy level, and does not have a playstyle at this time. She was moved to the side yard, and given a few moments to decompress before the handler entered the yard. She approached the handler with a neutral body, neutral gaze, and a neutral tail. She allowed the handler to pet her head, neck, and back. She tensed slightly as the assessment progressed, but remained easy to handle. The handler was able to check her ears and teeth, and touch her tail and all four paws. When the assessment was over, she approached the handler to solicit petting.
