A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Sacura greeted the runner nicely and was easy to leash/remove from the kennel. Sacura was taken to the catch pen and was easy to collar/leash. She greeted the dogs at the barrier nicely and was allowed into the play yard. Sacura displayed a slightly tense body, low tail, closed mouth, ears back, and soft eyes. Sacura appeared overwhelmed and approached the handlers. She became loose and wiggly when receiving petting/attention. Sacura spent the majority of the time amongst the handlers at times becoming focused on a handler. If they left the play yard Sacura would paw/dig/bark in their direction. Sacura spent some time socializing with the calmer dogs but did not engage in play. Sacura spent the majority of her time amongst the handlers soliciting petting from them. At one point Sacura attempted to jump a fence to join a handler outside of the play yard. Sacura can clear a 6ft high fence, but the handler was able to step in to prevent her. Sacura was placed in the adjacent yard with a handler for a handling assessment prior to returning to her kennel. Sacura could benefit from basic manners training, further socialization, and impulse control training. See additional assessment for placement recommendations. Sacura displayed a relaxed body, loose tail wag, open mouth pant, natural ear set, and soft eyes. The handler called Sacura over and she approached with a loose wiggly demeanor and solicited petting. The handler was able to examine Sacura's ears, mouth, abdomen, back, lower extremities, and tail. Sacura maintained a loose wiggly demeanor and continued to solicit petting post assessment.
