The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may
change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.
Atlas A5782657 (Intact) was at the front of the kennel with a neutral demeanor when the runner arrived. He approached to
sniff and licked the runner's hand through the barrier. However, retrieving Atlas from his kennel became slightly difficult as
he repeatedly dodged the leash. After multiple attempts, Atlas was leashed and then exited the kennel on his own. Atlas
proceeded to make his way to the catch pen with a moderate pull on the leash, bypassing his neighboring kennels. Inside the
catch pen, he was collared and leashed without issue. Atlas was allowed into the yard, where he ignored the other dogs,
choosing to explore the environment instead. He became slightly tense when approached by some of the other dogs, causing
him to growl as a signal for space without escalating further. Atlas allowed himself to be petted when roaming near the
handlers. For the rest of the session, Atlas continued wandering in the yard, tolerating the other dogs from a distance. Once
the session concluded, he was returned to his kennel without incident.
