A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Lancelot was anxiously barking at the back of the kennel when the runner approached. His body was tense, his eyes were hard with a focused stare, and his tail was low. He sniffed the runner's hand, and began to bark again. He sniffed the leash, nipped it, and began trying to pull it through the kennel door. The runner used the Pet Corrector, and Lancelot immediately backed away. He lowered his head and tail, and cowered in the corner of the kennel. He returned to the front of the kennel when the runner presented the leash. He was easy to leash and remove from the kennel, greeted his neighbor, and pulled strongly on leash. He was wary of being collared, but the runner moved slowly and was able to collar him with no issues. In the catch pen, his body was neutral, his eyes were soft, and his tail was neutral with a fast wag. He raced into the yard, and greeted the other dogs in a pushy manner. He was involved in a minor scuffle, but was easy to steer. He engaged in play with a high energy level, and tried to mount the other dogs. He over-reacted when one of the dogs corrected him, and engaged in another minor scuffle. He was easy to steer with a verbal correction. He solicited petting from the male handlers, but was wary of the female handlers. Lancelot is tolerant of the other dogs, has a high energy level, and prefers a push/pull playstyle. He was moved to the side yard and given a few moments to decompress before the female handler entered the yard. He kept his distance from the handler, but did not move away when the handler approached. The handler was able to gently restrain him using the leash, and he stood next to the handler with a neutral body, neutral gaze, and a neutral tail. He allowed the handler to pet his whole body, but occasionally froze, closed his mouth, and stared at the handler with hard eyes. He focused on the handler's face, but did not growl or try to bite. When the assessment was over, he moved away from the handler and would not return. However, when the male handler entered the yard, Lancelot ran over to him, jumped on him softly, and solicited petting with a relaxed body, soft eyes, an open pant, and a neutral tail wag. Lancelot seems to prefer interacting with men.
