The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.
She was fearful in kennel, sitting in the back corner while growling. The runner stepped in and began coaxing her. She appeared to relax and allowed him to place the loop leash over her head without issue. She had soft eyes while engaging the runner as the collar was easily clasped around her neck. As she turned and noticed the dogs in the yard, she began growling with hackles raised and lip curled. She was brought in the yard on a long, loose leash. A calm female shepherd began approaching her. Lyra growled with a postured body as the shepherd came within five feet of her. She continued growling until the shepherd turned away. She then saw a male shepherd on the other side of the yard and lip curled while growling. The handler walked her around the yard for a few moments, attempting to calm her and acclimate her. A second male shepherd then came up calmly. Lyra focused on him and began taking slow deliberate steps while growling with her teeth exposed. The handler walked her away and removed her from the yard. She was surrounded with another dog and has been kenneled with her without any reported negative behavior. Lyra is unsocialized and defensive with new dogs. BEHAVIORALLY OK FOR PUBLIC ADOPTION, NO DOGS (REQ), LOW ENERGY
