'The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change
based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.'
Panda was barking anxiously at the back of the kennel when the runner approached. He moved to the front of the kennel, and
allowed the runner to pet him through the kennel door. He retreated to the back of the kennel when the door was opened. He
barked defensively, and pressed his body into the corner of the kennel. His body was tense, his eyes were wide, and his tail
was tucked. The runner stepped into the kennel, and Panda began to growl and bare his teeth in a defensive manner. He
snapped at the leash when the runner tried to toss the leash over his head. Once leashed, he calmly exited the kennel with the
runner. He greeted his neighbors, and pulled lightly on leash. He was wary of being collared, but the runner moved slowly
and was able to collar him with no issues. In the catch pen, his body was neutral, his eyes were bright, and he seemed
interested in the other dogs. He entered the yard, and exchanged appropriate greetings with the other dogs. He roamed the
yard with a neutral body, but did not engage in play. He was wary of the handlers, but allowed petting if the handler moved
slowly. When he was returned to his kennel, he began to panic and flail on leash. He bit the leash several times as he
continued to flail. He required firm handling and the use of the Pet Corrector before he was able to settle down and walk
back to his kennel. He flailed away from the handler with wide eyes when the handler tried to remove the leash, but the
handler moved slowly and was able to remove the leash with no issues. Panda is tolerant of the other dogs, has a medium
energy level, and does not have a playstyle at this time.
