'The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may
change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.'
Pio was at the front of the kennel alert barking with a slightly tense demeanor as the runner approached. Pio was leashed and
removed from the kennel without issue and was taken to the catch pen. Once in the catch pen Pio was collared/leashed
without incident. He greeted the dogs at the barrier with a neutral demeanor and was allowed into the play yard. Pio
displayed a neutral body, closed mouth, ears back, low tail, and a neutral gaze. Pio allowed the dogs to sniff him but
appeared uncomfortable. He was tolerant of the dogs then moved on to explore the yard. Pio roamed the yard sniffing and
marking various locations. As he explored the yard Pio primarily kept to himself tolerating the dogs in the yard. After some
time, Pio started to socialize amongst the calmer dogs but did not participate in play. Pio maintained a neutral demeanor
displaying no play style at this time. Pio could benefit from further socialization and confidence building. See additional
assessment for placement recommendations.

Pio was in the play yard prior to the assessment and was given time to decompress. Pio displayed a relaxed body, high tail
with a soft wag, closed mouth, natural ear set, and soft eyes. The handler called him over, but Pio did not fully approach.
The handler lowered their body then Pio approached and allowed petting appearing more at ease. He allowed further petting
and the handler was able to examine Pio's ears, mouth, abdomen, back, lower extremities, and tail without incident. Pio
allowed further petting post assessment and appeared more at ease around the handler. Pio could benefit from a slow and
patient introduction with further socialization and confidence building. Pio is ok for public adoption medium energy level
calm dogs recommended.
