- \"The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behaviormay change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.\"
Quiet on approach, he was closed inside as staff was cleaning. He backed up to the comer and would not approach. Some defensive barking, I entered and presented my leash-he avoided and dodged it. Eventually I was able to get the leash on him and he walked out on his own. Easy on leash and to the yard. He explored and would come up/come over. Able to pet/touch his back end but anything around his neck/head area he whipped around and snapped. Unable to place an ID band on him due to his behavior and unable to successfully rope muzzle as he would dodge or lower his head, at times he lunged up and snapped. Able to use a double leash to retum him to kennel.
Rescue only at this time due to behavior

He was at the back of the kennel with a tucked tail, growling and ears pinned back. The handler stepped into the kennel partly and he continued to growl. When the handler would try to loop leash him, he would snap, bite the leash, and defensively bark. The handler tned to loop leash him several times, but he continued to whip his head fast and snap at the leash. On the final attempt to loop leash him, he lunged higher and snapped toward the handler's hand. The assessment was ended at this point, and the handler exited the kennel. When the gate was closed, he then began to slowly approach the front and had a lowhead. The handler knelt and began to verbally coax him. He continued to approach closer to the gate with a low head. The handler placed their hand on the kennel gate. He then suddenly gave fully exposed teeth, lunged forward growling, and snapped toward the gate. Due to being unable to remove him from the kennel and his defensive behavior, he will be designated as rescue only at this time.
