EVALUATION COMMENTS:
'The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' She was taken to the catch pen for the handling assessment after play group. The handler knelt and called to her, but she did not approach. The handler slowly approached her and picked up her leash. She allowed the handler to pet her head, but he was head shy and needs a go-slow approach. When the handler tried to check her teeth, she turned her head away. She allowed the handler to check her ears with no reaction. When the handler touched her back paws, she quickly pulled them away. When the handler touched her tail, she tucked it. When the handler touched and lifted her front paws, she applied downward pressure to resist them being handled. She was returned to her kennel without issue. She displayed no negative behavior toward the handler, but she is very timid and needs a go-slow approach. She appears under socialized around people and she needs someone that will go at her pace and build trust. Due to these factors and some handling sensitivities, she would do best in an adult only home.
