'The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A
dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and
unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may
change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.'
Iris was at the rear of the kennel barking defensively with a tense demeanor. The handler gave Iris time to acclimate to their
presence and used a slow approach. They were able to drape the leash onto Iris and was able to leash/remove her from the
kennel without incident. Iris was taken to the catch pen, and she was collared/leashed using a slow approach. She was
tense/defensive during the process, appearing uncomfortable. Iris greeted the dogs at the barrier with a tense demeanor and
was guided into the play yard. Iris displayed a tense body, closed mouth, ears back, low tail, and soft eyes with a furrowed
brow. She moved away from the dogs that approached her flashing teeth as she moved away. Iris scurried away and used the
handlers as a shield. Iris primarily kept to herself remaining near the handlers but would not interact with them. If the
handlers tried to interact with Iris, she gave a wary gaze and moved away. Iris primarily kept to herself for the majority of
the play session keeping away from both dogs and handlers. Near the end of the play session Iris approached other dogs to
sniff their rear. If the dogs turned to greet Iris, she would flash teeth and moved away. Iris kept to herself appearing wary of
the dogs and handlers in the yard. Iris could benefit from further socialization and confidence building. See additional

Iris was in the play yard prior to the assessment and was given time to decompress. Iris displayed a tense body, closed
mouth, tucked tail, ears back, and a stern gaze. She appeared wary of the handler and was given time to acclimate to their
presence. After some time and with some coaxing Iris sniffed their hand and briefly allowed the handler to pet her muzzle.
As the handler stood up Iris became tense and briefly flashed her teeth. The handler back tied her for safety and proceeded
using the assessment hand. The handler was able to briefly pet Iris but as they pet past her ears she pulled away and flailed
briefly. Once she settled the handler attempted to proceed with the assessment, but she continued to pull away/flail/muzzle
punch/snap at the assessment hand. Any time the handler attempted to touch/handle Iris past her ears she appeared tense and
uncomfortable not allowing the handler to examine her. Iris was double leashed and her collar/leash was difficult to remove
as she snapped at the handler but did not make contact. Iris was returned to her kennel without incident. Iris could benefit
from a slow and patient introduction with further socialization and confidence building. Iris is recommended to be made
available to Rescue Only (+KHOA handling sensitivity/lack of socialization) low energy level no other dogs recommended.
